"You" are my eyes

What comes to mind when you hear the word "conflict"? The 2024 Young Art annual theme focuses on "Art and Conflict," and for our first session, we'll use our eyes to explore it.

This course is like a dive beneath the sea, beginning with Ken Liu's sci-fi story, "All the Flavors" from his collection, The Paper Menagerie. We'll see how Chinese laborers who sailed to the U.S. in the 1850s to make a living and the local residents interpreted and influenced each other through their clashing gazes. Next, we'll follow George Orwell into the oppressive society of Oceania in "1984" to experience the ubiquitous surveillance and consider how we would see ourselves within it. Through literature and games, the power dynamics, cultural clashes, and issues of identity hidden within these gazes will become clues for our exhibition visit.

This preparation will allow us to dive into the exhibition "Ghost in the Sea - Musquiqui Chihying Solo Exhibition," where we'll see the artist connect the past and present of Mauritius, Africa, to present various conflicts and gazes. In the deep blue sea, the symbolic "ghosts" will serve as guides, leading us to redefine what "conflict" is. Together, we'll learn to "see" more deeply, diversely, and self-awarely—both inside and outside the exhibition.
