SIYAT MOSES

2022/05/07 - 05/28

2024 Tung Chung Prize|GHOST IN THE SEA-M
This exhibition traces a transformation in identity, shifting from the fundamental question of "Who am I?" to the empowered inquiry of "Who can I be?" Through the artist's pursuit and the discovery of Indigenous traces, these experiences are distilled into an objectified form for comparison, gradually shaping the emergence of a self-determined subject. Embanah operates on two levels. First, it acknowledges that encountering traditional remnants requires translation, a process that is inevitably flawed. These cultural gaps necessitate imaginative reconstruction; while the "original" can never truly be reclaimed, new meanings emerge from the fragments. Second, the project adopts an anthropological gaze toward identity. Much like Japanese-era researchers who crossed Taiwan’s rugged terrain to archive Indigenous life, the artist positions the "Other" as a subject for study. Through this process, culture and people are rendered into observable, transparent objects, inviting a critical reflection on how we see and categorize the self and others.

ARTIST

SIYAT MOSES

Ruan Yuan-min(阮原閩), also known as Siyat Moses, carries a Chinese name that literally signifies the union of his Seediq and Hoklo heritage. His artistic practice interrogates issues of identity and ethnic culture amidst the expansion of modernization and globalization. He seeks to establish a fluid spectrum within the marginal spaces between opposing forces. His work is primarily manifested through printmaking, textiles, and spatial installations.
