Generator Skin Friendly

YUNG-CHENG HSIEH

2022/09/03 - 10/01

2024 Tung Chung Prize|GHOST IN THE SEA-M
In this exhibition, we encounter a way of using language where seemingly unrelated statements are logically juxtaposed. Yet, it is only through the form of acting out—with its inherent physicality and divergence—that these words truly reveal themselves to the viewer. "Generators" (memes, titles, etc.) operate by fitting random information into fixed formats, a process that underscores the arbitrary nature of language in Hsieh’s practice. Conversely, the term (Skin-friendly) serves to unsettle the mechanical connotations of the "generator," evoking a recurring visual motif of fluidity and permeability.

ARTIST

YUNG-CHENG HSIEH

Born in 1995, Hsieh Yung-Cheng is a digital native whose past exists as a series of online archives; though the resolution may be low, the imagery and its underlying ideologies remain vivid. He is intrigued by how the physical body matures alongside information. Currently an MFA candidate at Taipei National University of the Arts, Hsieh employs information-oriented methodologies—across writing, speech, and video production—to delineate a "processor-like body" within the process of computation.
