Recalling the gaze upon the sea in memory—especially at night—white lines emerge from the darkness. Through hand-drawing these lines from memory, I’ve created multiple wave forms, piecing them together into a dim, somber seascape. "An unseen boat on the sea, empty of people, yet you are on it." These words invite the observer to momentarily detach from the body and become a phantom of themselves. In front of a seascape that defies reality—an imagined place never once inhabited—the act of "watching the sea" becomes a journey of inward vision rather than outward expression. Moving persistently inward, the internal architecture of the mind and body becomes an "other" that must be learned anew. Here, the self retreats to the farthest shadows, or simply ceases to be.
