When you close your eyes What kind of darkness do you see

Noise series is conceptualized around the absence of light and the principle of non-pinhole imaging. These images are created in darkness, challenging the essence of photographic media through anti-photography techniques. What is photography? It is the image left on a memory-retaining surface under the influence of light and pinhole imaging. If an image is produced through anti-photography methods, can it still be considered photography?
Photography has evolved over the 180 years since its invention. The technology for capturing images has continuously advanced, transitioning from metal plates to film, from wet plates to dry plates, and now to digital sensors. Digital sensors require electrical power to function and record images. By keeping the camera powered on and the lens cap on, and by pressing the shutter in a darkroom, one records the state of darkness. Essentially, as current flows through the sensor, energy accumulates, leading to overheating and random signal overflow. This process—where electrical energy converts to heat and random digital signals under varying conditions of time, sensitivity, and camera processing—produces abstract, pointillist images reminiscent of Impressionist art. This method leverages the inherent characteristics of the sensor itself, creating a unique form of photography.

ARTIST
YI-HANG PENG
Born in 1992 in Hsinchu, Taiwan, graduated from the Institute of Art and Design, Taipei University of Education. Photography is the main creative medium. The works explore the characteristics of the medium itself, pursue the limit state of the material, create a dialectic of the image, and try to find a new viewing method and image possibility in the gaps in the blurred zone. His works include "Forbidden Photography", "Midnight Roaming", "Human Garden", "Ghost Park", "Picnic", and "Dark Light". Art works have also been published in important international cities such as Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Japan, Korea, China, and Thailand.
