FERAL SHADE: CHU CHUN-TENG’S EEL PROJECT
CHU CHUN-TENG
2025/10/01 - 11/30
Shezidao is a sandbar shaped at the confluence of the Keelung and Tamsui Rivers, where the two waterways cut through Taipei City. Over the past century, the area has been repeatedly eroded by typhoon surges. Since 1963, a government-imposed construction ban has left Shezidao in a state of arrested development. Its landscape, suspended in time, stands in stark contrast to the rapid urban expansion of Taiwan’s capital, rendering the island a liminal, almost surreal zone seemingly cut off from the world.
Artist Chu Chun-Teng has been based in Shezidao since 2021. Following nearly a year of fieldwork, he has produced Eel—a three-channel video installation and a feature-length film of the same title. Conceived as twin works within the broader five-year Eel project, the two are deeply intertwined and mutually generative, yet each retains its own formal autonomy. For the first time, both works are brought together in their entirety, with the exhibition featuring the Taiwan premiere of the three-channel video installation and expanding the film beyond the cinematic frame.Through their simultaneous presentation in the art gallery and the cinema, Eel reflects the artist’s distinctive approach to navigating across different narrative media.
