LITTLE ANT & ROBOT

Using dance and technology to inform their creative vocabulary, Huang Yi Studio＋ combine different technological elements to yield assorted artistic creations. In performances from HUANG YI & KUKA, Under the Horizon, to A Million Miles Away, each of these creations touches upon different subjects and forms of expression. One such work, Little Ant & Robot, combines choreography and a KUKA robot to create an immersive café of the future, providing the audience with a full experience of all of the five senses.
As a performance, HUANG YI & KUKA signaled the beginning of Yi Huang’s dance with robots, and here that work’s creative concept, one which combined ‘multidisciplinarity, the body, and the humanities’, has been extended to deliver Little Ant & Robot. The choreography in this work marks a departure from that of traditional dance arrangements, with significant time and effort put into the programming of the robotic arms to create an immersive café. In this café, the KUKA robot becomes the chef, dancing and serving the audience alongside the dancers. By combining choreography with music and food, the audience can experience the work through the five senses of sight, sound, touch, taste and smell, whilst also dancing side by side with the KUKA robot and dancers in a café setting.

The works of Yi Huang, founder of Huang Yi Studio +, incorporate a high proportion of technological research and development, which he has gradually completed after years of experimentation and phased development. He has been invited to perform to high acclaim in nearly 20 countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, as well as locations in Europe and Asia. Huang Yi Studio + was established in 2010; in 2011, Dance Magazine named him as one of their “25 to Watch” and he received two consecutive recognitions by the ISPA (International Society for the Performing Arts) in 2015 and 2016. In 2017, he was invited to perform at the opening of TED’s annual conference. With their works HUANG YI & KUKA, Under the Horizon, and A Million Miles Away, Huang Yi Studio + has earned the distinction of Taiwan’s sole dance troupe to be recognized three times (2015, 2016, and 2020) by ISPA. Huang redefines “theater” performance through art and technology, dancing with robots to expand upon various imaginations of futuristic technology.
