OVER THE RAINBOW

RIVERBED THEATRE

2023/06/09 - 06/17

In 2011, Riverbed Theatre launched the Just for You series, an immersive theatrical experience performed to only a single audience member at a time. Over the Rainbow, one of the works in the series, transforms the theater into virtual reality, breaking away from the previous limitations of performing to one person at a time and in one place. In doing so, through the use of technology, this work creates an exclusive experience for the one viewer as if they are there in person.

Over the Rainbow examines the precarious balance between desire and satisfaction, between dreams and reality. Looking out from the center, the viewer observes as the surrounding space morphs and changes around them, placing them in various seemingly recognizable settings, from gallery spaces to theaters. Within this shifting landscape, various concrete and abstract objects constantly appear and disappear, maintaining the signature style of Riverbed Theatre’s "Imagination Theatre." The dream-like narrative logic established within this work leads the viewer to explore more deeply the boundaries that arise between the virtual and the real. The production also serves as a way to both symbolize and call into question the sense of discontent we can feel with our current lot in life — the longing for something just out of reach. Through this new medium of expression, Riverbed Theatre presents Over the Rainbow to shed new light on the following: if we are always somehow between one place and another, when can we ever live fully in the here and now?

ARTIST

RIVERBED THEATRE

Riverbed Theatre was founded in 1998 in Taipei, Taiwan. The company's image-based, Total Theatre productions blur the boundaries between visual and performing arts. Critics have praised the organic, sculptural quality of Riverbed's "subconscious" theatre, likening the performance to the best works of Samuel Beckett and David Lynch. As the Artistic Director of Riverbed Theatre, Craig Quintero has directed over 50 performances and exhibited his artwork at the Venice Biennale Collateral Events, Taiwan Fine Arts Museum, and Shanghai MOCA. Craig is a Professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Grinnell College.
